3 Reasons to Go with White Gold for Your Jewelry

August 12, 2020

Readers of our blog will note our passion for rose and yellow gold as a colorful way of expressing one’s personality. But while these materials may be popular among different age cohorts of women, the third common shade of gold rarely gets as much attention from fashion experts–white gold.

Still, white gold has a power of its own, and for a number of different reasons, designers still utilize the shade of metal for their luxury jewelry. Why is this the case? White gold has aesthetic uses that set it apart, and today, we’re going to take a peek at a few of those uses!

Blank Canvas

One of the primary reasons why designers turn to white gold for their designs is because white gold is a metal that blends the best of gold’s shine with a pale white color. Without sacrificing luxury, designers create a blank canvas on which they can do their designs.

What does this look like in practice? You’ll notice that many engagement rings from designers like Tacori are made with white gold. You’ll notice that this allows the diamonds used in their design to stand out more clearly. Quite a few contemporary designers seek to place more emphasis on the side and center diamonds used in their rings, and without the addition of metal colors,

Gender-Neutral

The “neutrality” of white gold also extends to its gender presentation. This doesn’t mean that white gold is androgynous–rather, it simply lacks any strong characteristics on its own. Rose gold, on the other hand, has a blushing, feminine appearance; yellow gold has traditionally dominated women’s jewelry.

This means that when designers are making men’s wedding bands, one of the most immediate options is to use white gold to express luxury without being too luxurious.

But of course, the neutrality of white gold doesn’t mean it doesn’t work perfectly for women’s jewelry! You can visit your local jewelry store and see firsthand that something as simple as dainty lacework in the metal or a treasure trove of diamonds is enough to transform the undifferentiated shine of white gold into something gorgeous, soft, and eminently womanly.

Universal Complement

White gold, as it says on the label, is white. And as any fashionista can tell you, black and white are such basic colors that they pair with practically anything. While yellow and pink gold may clash with certain gemstone colors, that’s almost never an issue for white gold. Check out the fashion rings from the Madison L Essential collection to see what we mean: The designer utilizes dozens of different colored gems, ranging from violet amethyst to deep red garnets, and the white gold used only serves to accentuate the saturation of their tones.

Alternatively, white gold complements other tones of gold too! Many of our favorite engagement ring designers, like Allison Kaufman and Hearts on Fire, use white gold as a frame on which they place designs in rose or yellow gold; or they use white gold prongs on rose or yellow gold bands. The effect is a stunning one, and we’ve found that most women tend to adore it.
